Swimming Policy

PURPOSE

1.1To provide a graded swimming program to develop children’s swimming and water survival skills.


GOALS

To develop:

2.1To develop children’s ability to swim and to promote water safety.


IMPLEMENTATION

3.1The program will be based on RLSSA Swim and Survive and Victorian Water Safety Certificate scheme.
3.2Children will be grouped according to individual ability and staff availability.
3.3Pupil/teacher ratio in the pool must be 1:10.
3.4Swimming teachers must be AUSTSWIM qualified.
3.5An emergency action plan is to be formulated prior to each program in accordance with the venue selected. Staff and children will be made aware of the emergency action plan to the commencement of the swimming program.
3.6Emergency practices and/or some water safety activity to be part of every program.
3.7Swimming lessons will be conducted at an appropriate venue.
3.8Each teacher will be responsible for the teaching and control of a group as delegated by the Swimming Co-ordinator.
3.9Parent volunteers will be required to assist the program.
3.10Appropriate resources for dry program implementation will be provided.
3.11Swimming program aims for 100% participation with a minimum of 50% attendance required in order for the program to run.
3.12Children not attending will complete water safety education at school.


EVALUATION

4.1Progress sheets based on Swim and Survive will be used to monitor individual progress.
4.2Swimming program to be reviewed on completion by teachers and co-ordinators.
